Overview

Nibi Metrics ("Nibi", "we", "us") is operated by Muskoka Research Inc. We believe privacy is a right, and we collect as little as we can while still running a useful service. This policy explains what we collect, why, and what control you have.

What we collect

We collect only what's needed to provide the service:

• Account information — your email address and, optionally, a display name.
• Your preferences — the locations you favorite, the alerts you create, and your unit and notification settings.
• Purchases — if you subscribe in the iPhone or Android app: which plan you have, its status and renewal or end date, and the store's record of your purchases, kept with your Nibi account so Premium works wherever you sign in.
• Usage analytics — aggregated, privacy-respecting metrics about how the app is used, to help us improve it.

We do not sell your personal data, ever.

How we use it

Your information is used to operate your account, deliver the alerts you've configured, remember your preferences across devices, and improve the product. Alert emails are sent only for alerts you create.

Service providers

We use a small number of processors to run Nibi, each receiving only what its job requires:

• Stripe — payment processing. Card details go directly to Stripe; we never see or store them.
• Apple (App Store) and Google (Google Play) — take payment for subscriptions bought in the apps. Your card and store account stay with them.
• RevenueCat — manages in-app subscriptions for us. It receives your Nibi account ID (a random code, not your name or email), the store's record of your purchases and, where analytics is on, your device's anonymous analytics ID.
• Resend — email delivery (account, alert, and newsletter email). Receives your email address and message content.
• Google Analytics — aggregated usage analytics.
• OpenAI — drafts explanatory text for reports and the newsletter. It receives aggregate hydrometric facts only — water levels, station names, computed statistics — and never your name, email, or any personal data.

If you subscribe to the Nibi Dispatch, we keep a record of your consent (time and source) as anti-spam law requires, and remove your address promptly when you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it.

If you purchase a Watershed Report, we keep the order configuration and the generated report with your account so you can access it; deleting your account removes them.

Water data sources

The water and weather data Nibi displays comes from public, authoritative sources — Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Water Survey of Canada, provincial agencies such as CEHQ, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the Environment Agency (England), SEPA (Scotland), Natural Resources Wales, the Office of Public Works in Ireland (waterlevel.ie), the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE), the State of Queensland (Water Monitoring Information Portal), the State of Victoria (Water Measurement Information System), the State of South Australia (Water Data SA), the Northern Territory Government (NT Water Data Portal), the State of Western Australia (Water Information Reporting, DWER), the French State's hydrometric network (Vigicrues, through Hub'Eau), the German Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV, through PEGELONLINE), Parks Canada (the Trent-Severn Waterway), the Canadian Hydrographic Service and NOAA (the Great Lakes). This data is not personal to you, and your use of Nibi does not affect those sources.

Cookies & local storage

We use essential cookies and browser storage to keep you signed in and remember your theme and unit preferences. We default to the most privacy-preserving options and do not use invasive cross-site tracking.

Your rights

You can access, export, or permanently delete your data at any time from Account → Danger zone. Deleting your account removes your personal information from our systems. You may also contact us with any privacy request.

Advertising and measurement

Nibi is ad-supported for visitors who are not on a paid plan. Most ads on Nibi are sold and served by us (Nibi Ads): they use no third-party trackers, build no advertising profiles, and nothing about you is sold or shared with advertisers. When no Nibi Ads campaign fits a page we may show an ad from Google AdSense instead, described below. Paid plans see no advertising of either kind.

• What we count. When an ad is on screen we record that it was seen; when you click it or tap Call we record that. These counts belong to the campaign and the page, not to you, and are used to bill the advertiser and report results to them in aggregate.
• Frequency. A small counter in your browser's local storage limits how many ads you see in a day. It never leaves your device.
• Keeping counts honest. Ad measurement is rate-limited on our servers in memory per session; nothing about that is written to a database.
• Advertisers. If you open an advertiser account we keep your business name, contact email, billing country, campaign settings, the images you upload, and your wallet ledger. Payments are processed by Stripe; we never see your full card number.
• Town search and location. In the ads portal, typing a town or postal code sends that text to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service to find coordinates. “Use my location” reads your device location once, with your permission, to centre a campaign; it is not stored.
• Maps. Map tiles across Nibi are served by Esri. Your browser requests them directly, which discloses your IP address to Esri as with any web resource.
• Google AdSense (backfill). When an AdSense ad is shown, Google and its certified vendors may use cookies or device identifiers to serve and measure it, and may personalise it based on your activity on other sites. You can opt out of personalised advertising at adssettings.google.com, and the consent choices you make in your browser apply.
• Product analytics. We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how Nibi is used, as aggregate events such as page views and whether a sign-up prompt was shown. See Cookies & local storage.
